So, here’s the Back Story behind how I discovered the Hustler’s Secret:
It all started years and years ago… I literally GREW UP at the golf course in the 70′s and 80′s… I was out there every single day from the time I was 6 years old… The course I grew up at was the local nine hole course just outside of Columbia SC.
Back in the 70′s and 80′s, there was a lot of gambling that went on at courses like this one and I was truly the proverbial “product of a mis-spent youth”. I was playing for money before I was 10 and I was a scratch golfer by the time I was 13.
Anyways, I played with guys from retired guys who like to play a 5 dollar nassau all the way to real serious players who had a couple thousand up for grabs on any nine holes. Now, usually when the stakes were that high, I wasn’t betting. I was the stake horse. In other words me and one of the guys would take on the other two and my partner would take all of our side of the bet. If we won, which we usually did, he would cut me in for a few hundred bucks.
It was a crazy yet fun life for a kid. Most of this heavy betting was occurring around the early 1980′s. I was in my teens at that point and had become a pretty good little golfer. But, I had worked for every bit of it. I had hit balls every day for years. I had played every day for years. I had put in the time…
One of the guys that I played a lot of golf with through those years was a Bonafide Hustler. I won’t mention his name, but we all called him “Big”. I’m not sure why we called him that, I always assumed it was because he was about 5 foot 6 inches and 300lbs. He always bragged that he “never worked a day in his life”.
He was good at everything… I wouldn’t play cards with him. He could stack a deck or double deal with the best of them. The only guys that ever played cards with him were the other hustlers or pigeons. Every once in a while a fight would break out between them in the card room. The weird thing about it was he had one of the worst looking golf swings I had ever seen.The dude looked like a weeble wobble spinning on a countertop when he swung. He always swung as hard as he could. But amazingly he hit the ball straight as a bullet every single time.
It was the craziest thing you have ever seen. I was always confused about this because I had to spend so much time practicing to play good golf and he would literally show up grab a few beers and hit the first tee. I never saw him practice. He only played when there was money on the line-otherwise, whats the use! I saw him shoot 65 on several occasions.
We played tons of matches and high stakes tournaments (called calcuttas) together through those years in the early 80′s. Then I went off to college. Got married. Had kids. As you can guess, I miss those days.
So, here we are 20 years later and I am grown with kids. I go back home to SC and my dad and I go out to the course to play some golf. After we are done, we come in the clubhouse and who do I see sitting there but “Big”…
Its been almost 20 years since I have seen him. He’s in his late 60′s now and doesn’t play golf anymore. He’s down to cards and Pool.
I go up and talk to him for a while. We talk about all the old days… The crazy characters and the crazy matches. Like the time we almost got killed when we won this calcutta by 10 shots…
And I tell him that I never could believe that he hit the ball as long and straight with that swing of his.
Then he said to me “Kid(he always called me kid) I’ve got a secret…”
